Movie Review: The Promising Young Woman

One of the 2020 movies I recently took time out to see this 2021 is the "Promising Young Woman". it actually isn't one of my best movies for the beginning of the year but it still didn't fail to dissapoint.

From the movie, Carey Mulligan (The major actress of the movie, plays the role of Casandra, a former medical student who dropped out of medical school over a traumatic event that happened in her past while in school.

Carey Mulligan while dealing with the trauma of a taped sexual assault video that happened in her past, spends most nights pretending to be drunk in various clubs and bars, waiting for men to pick her up and attempt to take advantage of her.

She seeks revenge on every Individual who has a biased view on rape and sexual assault with different techniques and styles.. she forgives those who truly regret their actions in setting the accused free without a charge and tries to show them what it feels like if it was someone they loved.

The movie was really unpredictable till the end where she eventually lost of her life to the guy who molested her back in school. The guy was about to get married when she decided to halt the wedding by punishing and hurting her med school mate who forcefully assaulted her sexually.

The movie actually projects a strong female voice over sexual assault while passing out a very relevant message with emotional and outstanding performances from the characters.

The movie featured Carey Mulligan (an Oscar nominated actress), Bo Burnham (The Big Sick and director/Writer of Eighth Grade), Alison Brie (GLOW, Community, The Post),Alfred  Molina (Spider-Man 2, Magnolia) and a debut act for the director Emerald Fanell.

Although, most of the men in the movie are obviously portrayed as bad, but it is for a good reason. While Most of them claim to be “nice guys” and those unforgivable actions they did was while they were still young and naive, the promising young woman forces men to not only check themselves but their friends as well.

The Promising Young Woman is one of the best films of 2020 with a strong relevant and important message and I strongly recommend it for you to see.

Verdict: 4 🌟 out of 5
